ViKAS Centre Org is an affiliate of EduCARE India which was developed under project RuralDev SEVA (Rural Development through Social Entrepreneurship and Volunteer Action). It is a unique organisation that is based on applied research and innovation for rural grassroots development. It seeks to leverage the will and skills of motivated youth leaders to create positive change in the world. The foundation of our innovation seeks to demonstrate that young people can self-organise and be main drivers of change.
The International Internship Program of ViKAS Centre Org is designed to provide selected applicants with rewarding educational and learning experiences, as well as opportunities to contribute in one of several critical work areas in various developmental projects in India. Currently, we work in four different locations across Punjab: Adampur, Kartarpur, Dosarka, and Janauri. There are plans to initiate new centres near Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan in 2012.
While working closely together with local employees and volunteers, EduCARE India interns acquire knowledge and skills in specific areas, work on critical assignments and projects, receive exposure to various professions and gain first-hand experience working in a non-profit community and social enterprise setting in India. Interns will receive:
• Course credit (when available);
• Relevant work experience
• Exposure to Indian culture;
• Future references.
As some projects are still at an initial stage, you need to be innovative and motivated. This will involve interaction with local people and a practical approach to work. You will need to work well with your team to make your project a success and be able to monitor progress and suggest improvements. Some research may be needed and weekly documentation is also crucial to ensure the projects success and continuity after you leave.
ViKAS is an Intern run organisation, where young leaders manage and direct the projects through their own creativity and initiative. A ViKAS intern has many responsibilities and greater independence than a volunteer. There will be opportunities for training, informal and peer-to-peer learning. There is a mentor/guide for support from time to time but there is very little on ground day to day supervision.
It is important that you provide ViKAS Centre Org with some flexibility with regards to the nature of your work as well as perseverance when inconveniences or delays arise. A positive attitude is the key to a successful internship. We have compiled a list of skills and qualities that span across all job roles and make up for the successful EduCARE intern.
